Permanent hairdyes can give the most severe adverse effects, but most reactions come from facial and body moisturisers.

From 2008 to 2014, the National Register for Adverse Effects from Cosmetic Products received 442 notifications, of which 82 per cent were submitted by pharmacists.

About 3,000 different chemicals (both synthetic and natural) can be used to make a perfume or a fragrance.

Preservatives are a major cause of contact dermatitis. Areas such as the face, neck, hands and armpits are frequently affected.
