All births and pregnancies ended after gestation week 12 must be notified to the Medical Birth Registry of Norway.
What is registered?
All births and pregnancies that end after the 12th week of pregnancy must be reported to the Medical Birth Registry, including stillbirths and terminations after the 12th week of pregnancy. Maternity institutions and health personnel who assist with births outside an institution must report the information.
The information in the registration form provides knowledge and information about the woman's health in connection with pregnancy, childbirth and during the maternity period, as well as about children's health at birth and up to one year of age.
The following information is recorded:
- Information about the identity of the child and parents
- Information about the mother's health before and during pregnancy, as well as any complications during pregnancy and/or at birth. Examples of such information can be the mother's illnesses during pregnancy, interventions/measures during birth, complications during birth, complications in the mother after birth, whether the child is born live or stillborn, and any congenital diseases or deformities in the child. In addition, information about assisted reproduction or tribunal-processed terminations of pregnancy are included.
Right of reservation
There is a right of reservation linked to the registration of some information in the Medical Birth Registry:
- Mother's occupational conditions, smoking habits, and use of alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy
- Permanent registration of directly personally identifiable information about women who have had a termination of pregnancy performed in accordance with the Abortion Act § 2 third paragraph letter c. Such terminations of pregnancy are granted if "there is a great risk that the child may develop a serious illness, as a result of hereditary predisposition, disease or harmful influences during pregnancy".
- Information about assisted reproduction
