Sammendrag
Irritabel tarm-syndrom (IBS) er en vanlig kronisk lidelse som rammer ca. 20 % av befolkningen. Diagnosen er utelukkende basert på symptomer som inkluderer forskjellige kombinasjoner av magesmerter/ubehag, diare og forstoppelse. Symptomene kan være svært plagsomme og medfører for mange av pasientene et høyt forbruk av helsetjenester og økt sykefravær. Årsaken til lidelsen er uklar, men mekanismer som involverer samspill mellom unormal tarmaktivitet og økt følsomhet i tarmen er viktige for IBS. Forskning har vist at både arvelige og miljømessige faktorer har betydning for utvikling av IBS. I denne studien ønsker vi å utnytte de unike fordelene ved tvillingstudier for å undersøke om miljøfaktorer som sosiale forhold, psykisk stress, tidligere infeksjoner og tarmfloraens sammensetning kan påvirke arveligheten av IBS. Resultatene fra studien vil gi verdifull innsikt om de biologiske mekanismene bak symptomene til IBS, og ha betydning for utvikling av ny behandling for IBS.
