Return of results, data and generated variables from research projects to MoBa

Published Updated

Data and analytical results from biological material from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort study (MoBa) generated in research projects must be sent (returned) to MoBa as soon as the analyses are completed. Data collected in projects and generated variables must be transferred to MoBa in accordance with the agreement entered into with MoBa. The project manager is responsible for ensuring that the data is transferred.

The legal basis for the return of data is regulated in the Norwegian Health Registry Act (‘Forskrift om befolkningsbaserte helseundersøkelser’ §5-1) and the agreement entered into between NIPH and the responsible research institution prior to the start of the project.

MoBa wants to make the data available for further use in new research projects. For analysis results from biological material, the return is especially important as the material is a limited resource.

Results from analysis of biological material

Raw data from the analyses as well as any quality controlled (QC) results must be sent to MoBa. The data must be labelled with the RetrivelDetail-ID received by the laboratory with the samples.

Contact MoBa data to arrange the transfer of analysis results to MoBa. The file containing the analysis results should be encrypted to prevent unauthorized access by anyone other than the recipient. The password should be provided separately from the analysis results.

Documentation – metadata

The results must be accompanied by a document describing the results as well as all abbreviations and definitions used. Any available data sheets with meta-data from instruments, kits and/or chips etc. used in the analysis should be attached.

MoBa requests that the forms listed below be completed by laboratory and principal investigator, respectively, and returned to MoBa MoBa data. Please use one form per analysis or per laboratory.

DNA/RNA - analysis report to be completed by researcher/principal investigator (download Word document)

Plasma/urine/blood - analysis report to be completed by researcher/principal investigator  (download Word document)

GWAS and EWAS analysis

To return results from GWAS or EWAS analysis the following documentation must be sent to MoBa data

  • A list including all samples received by the laboratory with the RetrivelDetail-ID (sample identification) sent from the biobank. All samples sent from the biobank must be reflected in the list, regardless of their analysis status. The list must contain the following information about the samples:
    • Samples analysed
    • Samples that failed in the analysis
    • Samples not analysed and justification (e.g. empty well)
  • A description of the method used (e.g. GWAS)
  • Chip
  • A contact person at the laboratory who may assist with the transfer of the raw data if required including contact information (email).

The method of transfer of raw data is agreed with MoBa in eash case. Keys for linking the results with MoBa questionnaire data will be released when the information listed above and the raw data are transferred to MoBa.

For GWAS the following raw data files should be returned:

  • .idat-filer
  • .egt filer
  • Plink-filer

Residual material

Handling of residual material must be agreed upon with MoBa in each case. Expenses related to the return of the residual material may be charged the principal investigator.

Data collected in research projects and generated variables

Data collected from MoBa participants in research projects and generated variables based on MoBa data must be transferred to MoBa data in accordance with the agreement. The data must be followed by a document describing variables (variable documentaion) and procedures for any investigations performed.
