Summary
In developing the National Clinical Guideline for the assessment and follow-up of children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, the Norwegian Directorate of Health requires a systematic review of research on the experiences of parents whose children with autism receive early interventions involving comprehensive treatment models. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has been commissioned to prepare a qualitative evidence synthesis on the experiences of parents of children aged 0–6 years with autism who receive early interventions. The findings will contribute to the evidence base underpinning the guideline on assessment and follow-up of children and adults with autism. We will adhere to established methodological guidance and apply the following approach in conducting this evidence synthesis: We plan to conduct systematic searches across multiple databases. Two reviewers will independently assess the relevance of references based on titles and abstracts against the project’s inclusion criteria. For references considered relevant, full texts will be retrieved and independently assessed. Any disagreements will be resolved through discussion. The included studies will then be appraised for methodological quality. Data from the studies will be extracted and synthesized using a three-step thematic synthesis approach. The digital tool NVivo will be used to organise and analyse the qualitative data. The Interactive Summary of Qualitative Findings (iSoQ) will be used to support a systematic assessment of confidence in the review findings, in line with the GRADE-CERQual approach.
