In order to build back better as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic we need the meaningful involvement of young people in interventions aiming to support healthier lifestyles. This was the message from CO-CREATE as presented by Margrete Bjørge Katanasho (Press – Save the Children Youth Norway) and Arnfinn Helleve (Norwegian Institute of Public Health) in the webinar hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) on July 2nd 2020 called “NCD Voices in the Decade of Action – Prescriptions for a healthy and green recovery from COVID-19”.
Prescription for a healthy COVID-19 recovery
WHO has launched a new manifesto for a healthy recovery from COVID-19 emphasizing that the world cannot afford repeated disasters on the scale of COVID-19, whether they are triggered by the next pandemic, or from mounting environmental damage and climate change. Aligning with the ethos of build back better within the global health community, the manifesto states that going back to “normal” is not good enough. Building back better will require taking a look at the current policies and interventions regarding our food systems to analyze how we can move forward to develop healthier cities and healthier populations, ultimately reducing the burden on NCDs and mental health conditions.
Healthy lives and wellbeing for all at all ages
This is the aim of the third of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals, which includes non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health, spanning from prevention to treatment. The foundation of the sustainable development goals originate from a “no one left behind” philosophy. In order to follow up on this ambition, we need to bring voices that are often unheard into global efforts, including young people.
CO-CREATE is working with youth to get their perspective on drivers of health related behaviors among young people, and explore their suggestions for policy actions. Working with young people as genuine project partners we aim to involve young people in a meaningful way, giving them real influence in discussions and decisions and sharing knowledge in order to support their leadership, ideas and engagement.
