The Adult Immunisation Programme offers vaccination agianst COVID-19 (coronavirus) and influenza to everyone over the age of 65, as well as children and adults in risk groups. People turning 65 are also offered the vaccine against pneumococcal disease.
The government has decided to establish an adult immunisation programme, and the regulation (Forskrift om nasjonalt vaksinasjonsprogram) came into force on 1 June, 2025. Vaccines in the programme will start being offered in the fall of 2025.
The Adult Immunisation Programme offers vaccines against COVID-19 and influenza to everyone aged 65 and older, as well as children and adults in risk groups. Additionally, those aged 65 are offered a vaccine against pneumococcal disease.
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health recommends a COVID-19 booster dose to people aged 75 and older, and tochildren and adults in risk groups. However, those aged 65–74 can also receive the vaccine through the immunisation programme if they wish.
An immunisation programme means that:
- The municipality ensures that recommended target groups are offered the vaccines in the programme and are given information about how vaccination is organised locally.
- Everyone in the target groups living or temporarily residing in Norway has the right to be vaccinated.
- It is easier to receive compensation for alleged vaccine injuries because there are specific rules regarding the burden of proof when handling compensation claims for vaccines administered through the programme.
The goal of the immunisation program is to prevent illness and death from influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease. To ensure that as many people as possible receive vaccines, reminders will be sent to those over 65 years who have not yet been vaccinated in accordance with the programme.
