The commission was to identify research literature about physical and physiological effects of bed rest in older adults.
Methods
Vi developed a search strategy for a systematic literature search and searched medical research databases. The search was carried out in January, 2019. Two researchers independently screened titles and abstracts, and assessed their relevance with regard to our predefined inclusion criteria.
Results
- We identified 2,558 references. Of these, 25 were possibly relevant.
- 10 studies addressed the effects of bed rest in healthy older adults.
- 15 studies addressed the effects of bed rest in older adults with health issues.
