Summary

The Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services was commissioned by the “Bestillerforum RHF” to undertake a systematic literature search of systematic reviews with subsequent sorting of relevant publications on music therapy treatment without concomitant antipsychotic drug treatment (non-drug therapy) for patients with psychotic disorders.

Methods

We conducted a literature search to identify systematic reviews concerning use of music therapy to treat serious psychiatric disorders. The search was conducted in medical and social scientific databases, looking for systematic reviews. Two researchers, independently, reviewed titles and abstracts.

Results

We included five systematic reviews as possibly relevant.

The included reviews concerned music therapy mainly as an adjunct to standard treatment and not music therapy alone without concomitant medications. We did not read the studies in full text and therefore not critically appraised the studies. It is therefore, not possible to draw any firm conclusions about the results of the studies. We present abstracts and comments of the identified systematic reviews.
