We did not find any systematic reviews about the question. We therefore conclude that there currently is no reliable summarized research about the effect of school meals on the health and cognitive functioning of school children. There might be good primary studies, but within our available time, we chose to limit our work to reviews. Soon there will be published a Campbell review that is expected to give a more thorough and more updated summary. We found four reviews of low methodological quality published between 1986 and 2000. The results from these do not rule out the possibility that school breakfast/lunch may improve the children’s school performance, mood, and the classroom atmosphere. But neither is there a basis for claiming that the interventions have an effect.
