Summary
In Norway, the Education Act specifies that children and youth have the right to attend public primary and secondary education. If a student is absent, the municipality/county authority has a duty to follow up. Student absenteeism is a serious and possibly increasing problem, with potentially significant costs for both the individual and society. Schools, school owners and collaborating agencies must work together to prevent absenteeism and follow up with students who are absent. A critical challenge in this work is developing and strengthening productive partnerships between schools and families.
We will conduct a mixed-methods systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine: 1) the effects of and experiences with interventions aimed at school-home collaboration to prevent or address student absenteeism at all school levels and grades, and 2) experiences related to school-home collaboration.
We will search for studies from OECD countries and narrow the selection to Nordic or Scandinavian countries if necessary. The procedure will include specified inclusion criteria, a systematic literature search, independent study selection, data extraction, assessment of the studies’ internal validity, and synthesis, analysis, and integration of quantitative and qualitative data.
