NORSURV – Improvements to the Norwegian Surveillance Systems for Infectious Diseases – is a project co-funded under the European Union’s EU4Health Programme, grant agreement No 101183284.

Epidemiological surveillance is the cornerstone of disease prevention, tracking infectious threats, immunity, and vaccination trends. By systematically collecting, analysing, and sharing critical health data, it empowers us to stay ahead of outbreaks and protect public health.

The Problem: Outdated disease surveillance in Norway

Norway’s current surveillance systems face significant challenges, including reliance on paper-based reporting, limited tracking of severe outcomes, and lack of secondary data sources. These issues result in incomplete surveillance, inadequate support for key stakeholders, and non-compliance with European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reporting requirements.

The Solution: Meet NORSURV

NORSURV is here to transform surveillance of infectious diseases by introducing digitalized, automated processes and leveraging secondary data sources, making surveillance smarter, faster and more effective. Legal frameworks will look to be updated to support these changes, while staff capacity and expertise will be strengthened through targeted training and on-the-job learning.

The Impact: A safer, healthier Norway

NORSURV will deliver a modernized, digital surveillance system to improve the quality and efficiency of Norway’s infectious disease monitoring and reporting. Better data means better decisions, and by automating workflows and integrating diverse data sources, NORSURV will enhance public health decision-making and strengthen efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases. The project, led by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), will position Norway as a leader in surveillance innovation.
