Funded by NordForsk, the network fosters collaboration to enhance pandemic and epidemic preparedness.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought mathematical modelling into the spotlight, where it played a critical role in informing policy decisions—helping to understand transmission dynamics, assess disease severity, and provide short-term forecasts and scenario analyses.

At the same time, the pandemic highlighted the need for stronger, ongoing collaboration between modelling experts and policymakers to ensure readiness and effective response in times of crisis. This network builds on partnerships formed during the pandemic, particularly through the NordForsk-funded projects NordicMathCOVID and Nordemics, and aims to reinforce and expand them.

Network aims

The Nordic Pandemic Preparedness Modelling Network aims to advance research, training, and education in infectious disease modelling by fostering cross-sector collaboration between academia, government agencies, and policy stakeholders throughout the Nordic countries.

Key initiatives

Key initiatives include:

  • Monthly webinars to share knowledge and foster dialogue
  • Annual scientific meetings to connect leading Nordic researchers
  • Hands-on workshops simulating pandemic response scenarios
  • Support for summer schools in statistical and modelling methods
  • Thematic policy meetings with active participation from stakeholders
