About the Course

The “Introduction to the ATC/DDD methodology” course gives a general overview of the ATC/DDD methodology. In this course, you will be introduced to the basic principles of the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system and the Defined Daily Dose (DDD). Applications of the ATC/DDD methodology will be presented and discussed. 

This 2-day course includes theoretical lectures and practical sessions. The lectures will cover the following topics: 

  • Historical background and development of the ATC/DDD methodology
  • Principles for ATC classification and DDD assignment
  • ATC codes and DDDs for fixed combinations
  • How to apply for an ATC code or a DDD, and ATC/DDD changes
  • Different applications of the ATC/DDD methodology, strengths, and limitations

The working group sessions are important elements of the course. Various ATC/DDD challenges related to the application of the methodology in drug consumption statistics will be discussed. 

Background knowledge

The course is open to all interested parties.  However, basic knowledge in common medical terminology is recommended. The course is in English.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology

The course is arranged by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology, located at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Norway. The Centre is responsible for the maintenance and development of the ATC/DDD system. New drugs are classified and DDDs are assigned by the Centre in cooperation with the WHO International Working Group for Drug Statistics Methodology, consisting of international experts in the fields of clinical pharmacology, pharmacoepidemiology, public health, and drug regulation. An expert from the Working Group participates as lecturer in the course.

This is a 2-full-day (from 9.00 to 16.30) course and will be held on the 12 and 13 of June 2025.

Language

English.

Participation fee

€ 450,–. Includes documentation, study material, coffee and lunch (both days), and dinner on Thursday 12 June 2025. Accommodation and breakfast are not included.

Cancelation policy

The participation fee can be fully refunded for cancellations before May 31. Please note cancellations after May 31. will not be refunded.
