Approaching tobacco-related behaviour through the lens of distinction theory

Project

Last update

The project seeks to establish social, cultural, economic and demographic markers of various groups of tobacco users.

Summary

One element of the investigation asks whether there are attitudinal and information/knowledge differences and risk perception differences. The project will also analyse smoking as a form of social distinction marker and explore possible variation in the symbolic value invested in tobacco products by different age and user groups. Factors related to user groups’ life styles over time will be described, with particular emphasis on elucidating how smoking habits dovetail with wider patterns of cultural preferences and economic and material situation. The information to emerge from the project should – in conjunction with health communication theories – help the authorities and others select the most likely forms and channels of communication for preventive action.
