The High North is an important area of commitment for the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Barents cooperation and the Arctic Council have been important arenas for collaboration on public health issues.

Strategic goals, priorities, and instruments through which the High North commitment should be implemented in the next 20-30 years are described in the Report to the Storting (White Paper) No.7 (2011-2012) The High North: Visions and strategies.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health participates in a vast number of collaborative projects at the local level in the Barents region and under The Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Well-being.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health contributes both through its co-operation projects and as a member of the Barents Programme Committee which gives advice to the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services. Northwestern Russia is an area of special interest in the High North region. In addition, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health participates in interregional Nordic collaboration with partner institutes in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.
