A systematic search for empirical studies, employing any kind of study design, on the effect of or experiences with special prison units for foreigners.
Key message
Norway has a special prison unit for foreigners, the Kongsvinger prison. Similar special prison units for foreigners seem to exist in other European countries too, such as Sweden, Denmark and England.
The Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Service commissioned a systematic search from The Social Research Unit at the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services. The aim was to identify studies that investigated effects of or experiences with special prison units for foreigners.
Methods
We conducted a systematic search for empirical studies, employing any kind of study design, on the effect of or experiences with special prison units for foreigners. We searched in medical and social science databases, as well as sources of grey literature. The search was conducted in July-August 2014.
Results
- We identified 5029 references in total. Among these, we considered two to be possibly relevant according to the inclusion criteria.
- Both studies are qualitative. One study was performed in Great Britain, the other in USA.
There is little available literature on special prison units for foreigners.
