Summary
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has been commissioned to assess the effects, safety and cost-effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for osteonecrosis.
Osteonecrosis is a bone disease that can progress to collapse of bone structure in one or more joints. In severe cases, total joint replacement is often the only option that allows patients to resume normal activities. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may be a joint preserving treatment option. HBOT involves inhaling pure oxygen under pressure. The aim of this health technology assessment is to assess the effects, safety and cost-effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for osteonecrosis.
