Our research question is: What are the effects of and experiences with an alternative training arena at a workplace for students who meet the criteria for individually adapted education?

Summary

According to the Education Act, children and young people have the right to public primary and secondary education. If a student is absent, the municipality/county has an obligation to follow up. Student absenteeism is a serious and growing problem, with potentially significant costs for the individual and society. Both primary and secondary schools can offer alternative education, based on an individual assessment. Such education at a workplace can provide instruction in school subjects and work training one or more days a week. Our research question is: What are the effects of and experiences with an alternative training arena at a workplace for students who meet the criteria for individually adapted education? We will examine effects on absenteeism, the degree of completed education, skills, and experiences. We are unsure about the extent of relevant research and therefore plan two alternative approaches, in prioritized order, both following thorough and systematic literature searches: 1. A report with an overview of systematic reviews if these collectively answer all or parts of the research question. We will assess the quality of the included reviews and write a brief summary of how each review addresses the research question. If there are no relevant and sufficiently comprehensive systematic reviews, we will proceed to alternative 2. 2. A systematic review of Nordic primary studies, or possibly only Norwegian if there are many studies. We will assess the quality of included studies, extract relevant data, synthesize the results, and analyze them.
