Use of face masks in schools and childcare centres

Published

We do not recommend the use of face masks in schools. This applies to both students and staff in primary school, secondary school and upper secondary school. The same applies to children and staff in childcare centres.

We do not recommend the use of face masks in schools. This applies to both students and staff in primary school, secondary school and upper secondary school. The same applies to children and staff in childcare centres.

Outside the school setting, the recommendations for using face masks only apply to pupils and students of secondary school age and above. For example, this includes public transport if it is not possible to comply with distance requirements, depending on the infection situation.

The recommendation does not apply to people who, for medical and other reasons, are not advised to wear face masks.

Face masks not recommended for children

We do not recommend the use of face masks by children. Children may have difficulty wearing a face mask correctly, and very young children may find it difficult to breathe well when wearing a face mask.

Staff in childcare centres and schools who have a higher risk of a severe course of COVID-19 should discuss the need for workplace adjustment with their doctor.
