Martin Flatø holds a PhD in demography from University of Oslo, and his dissertation focused on how gender dimensions in mortality and other outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa are affected by changes in climatic conditions and parental preferences. He has since worked on the interplay between education and health and is currently involved in the Health-GAP project on causes and health consequences of gender differences in school performance.
