Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome - Protocol for Health Technology Assessment - project description

Published Updated

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has been commissioned to carry out a Health Technology Assessment of decompression surgery in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Summary

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve entrapment disorder. It is caused by compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Typical symptoms include numbness and tingling mainly in the thumb and radial fingers, aching and pain in the anterior wrist and arm. Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome is a well established and commonly applied treatment in the specialist health care system. In Norway, there is a regional variation in the provision of treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has been commissioned by The National System for Managed Introduction of New Health Technologies to carry out a Health Technology Assessment of decompression surgery in carpal tunnel syndrome. We will evaluate and summarize the effect and safety, and conduct a health economic evaluation of decompression surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome compared to non-surgical treatment.
