Årsaker til bakteriell meningitt i Conakry, Guinea - project description
Published Updated
The objective of this study is to provide data on the aetiology of consecutive bacterial meningitis cases from a hospital in Conakry, Guinea.
Summary
Bacterial meningitis is listed as one of the priorities of the current plans to reinforce surveillance of epidemic diseases in Guinea. This aim can be most satisfactorily met by having in place laboratory-based surveillance that enables support to the field epidemiologists in confirming the identity of the causative organism for the individual patients and outbreaks. This will facilitate a meaningful treatment strategy and vaccine intervention in coming years. A conjugate vaccine against serogroup A meningococcal disease has now been pre-qualified by the WHO, and has been implemented across most Meningitis Belt countries since 2010. An implementation of this vaccine in Guinea will be informed by data on preventable disease burden of bacterial meningitis disease in Guinea, which can only be provided by long-term and laboratory-based diagnostics. The objecive of this study is to provide data on the aetiology of consecutive bacterial meningitis cases from a hospital in Conakry, Guinea
