Årsaker til og alvorlighetsgrad av bakteriell meningitt i Etiopia - prosjektbeskrivelse
Aetiology data from laboratory-based surveillance of bacterial meningitis in Ethiopia both in epidemic and non-epidemic periods are desired for decision making on vaccine-preventable disease burden as well as for informing diagnostic methods and therapeutic interventions. The first aim of this study is to provide data on the aetiology of consecutive bacterial meningitis cases from selected hospitals in Ethiopia, in areas with elevated risk of epidemic meningitis. Secondly, there is currently no definition of the threshold level of bactericidal antibodies that correlates with protection against serogroup A meningococcal disease. We aim to provide an estimate by studying bactericidal antibodies in acute-phase sera from patients with laboratory-confirmed meningococcal disease. Thirdly, we will investigate the potential association between acute SBA titer and disease severity and meningococcal DNA load in CSF and serum.
