Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea, represents an emerging global health problem with an estimated 87 million new cases annually. Gonococcal infection has especially severe effects on women's reproductive health. There is an urgent need for the development of a gonorrhea vaccine as currently no vaccines are available and antimicrobial resistance has raised to the specter of untreatable infections.
