In this study, we want to investigate the genetic relatedness between the bacterial strains of two very similar pneumococcal serotype 4 outbreaks. In 2019, an outbreak of pneumococcal disease was observed Møre and Romsdal. A few years earlier the same strain (serotype and genotype) had caused an outbreak in Belfast. These outbreak strains will be investigated together with some other pneumococcal strains to get insight in possible temporal-spatial changes within the genotype. Furthermore, we would like to compare the genetics of some virulence factors between the strains. We hypothesis that the outbreaks strains are genetically more clustered than the non-outbreak serotype 4/ST801 and other (serotype 4) isolates. Such knowledge provides more insight in possible explanations on why these outbreaks occurred and whether the virulence of the outbreak strains may have played a role.
