Abortion - pregnancy termination

The Medical Birth Registry of Norway is notified of all abortions and produces statistics. These statistics are an important resource for researchers and in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. In 2006, new routines were introduced for abortion notifications.

    The number of abortions has long been highest among women in the 20-24 year age group. The number of terminations among teenagers has shown a falling trend since self-determined abortion was introduced in 1979.

  2. Previous abortions and exercise – do they affect pregnancy?

    illustration photoWomen who have had two or more induced abortions have a reduced risk of pre-eclampsia by 60 %. It is not currently understood to what degree physical activity during pregnancy protects against pre-eclampsia, compared to previous studies. This is shown in two new studies from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) that use data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

  3. Differences in the number of terminations among women of different ethnic backgrounds

This is shown in the first national survey that deals with termination among refugees, immigrant workers and ethnic Norwegian women. The survey is a collaboration between the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and hospitals in Oslo.
