Diabetes – the modern epidemic
Diabetes is on the increase globally. It is estimated that 171 million people have the disease (WHO). By 2030, this number could be over twice as many - 366 million. Nearly 140 000 people use medicines for diabetes in Norway today. However, we do not know how many actual diabetes cases there are as some are undiagnosed or handled with exercise and diet control.

New report
There are large health differences between groups of immigrants in Oslo. Compared with Norwegians, the differences are also great. The differences are seen for risk factors and actual diseases. This is shown in a new report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Five of the largest immigrant groups were compared with each other and the ethnic Norwegian population. The report was commissioned in order to target health care better.

Human parechovirus is a harmless virus which is encountered by most infants and displays few symptoms. Suspected of triggering type 1 diabetes in susceptible people, research methods need to take this “silent” virus into consideration. This comes from findings in a study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
